The International Centre-Museum named after Nicholas Roerich (ICR) with a status of a public cultural enlightening centre was founded by the initiative of Svetoslav, the younger son of Helena and Nicholas Roerich. In 1990, Svetoslav Roerich transferred the invaluable heritage of his parents from India to Russia on the condition that a public Museum was to be established in Moscow. The management of the future Museum was entrusted to his good friend Lyudmila Shaposhnikova – a writer and specialist in Indian culture, who was appointed by Svetoslav as his trustee. Due to Shaposhnikova’s efforts and with support from the famous diplomat Yuli Vorontsov and sponsor Boris Bulochnik, Svetoslav’s will was fulfilled. The public Museum in Moscow became the second museum in the world founded by a member of the great family, the first one founded by Nicholas and Helena Roerich in New York. 0

"On 17 (29) August 1898, the scene in the former Carriage Yard near the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Volkhonka was unusually animated. Members of the royal family had just arrived. Professors and students of Moscow University, artists, young ladies from the Alexandro-Mariinsky Institute, government officials, and members of the City Duma, the nobility and the merchantry had taken their places on two specially installed stands. On one stand the Moscow intelligentsia was congregated: ladies in white dresses and hats, gentlemen in dark morning suits. The other stand was resplendent with frothy lace and the aiguillettes of military uniforms. The occasion was the laying of the foundation stone for a new Moscow museum, created on public funds, the Museum of Fine Arts named in honour of Emperor Alexander III and attached to the Imperial Moscow University."

Try and imagine what a museum of creativity looks like. This book tells of a challenging exhibition held in one of the major Russian museums-the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Arseniy Zhilyaev created a conceptual project for an imaginary museum. The viewer sees into the future after the liberation/revolution and is confronted with a radically different outlook on the history of twentieth-century art. At the core of the exhibition, there turns out to be a complex dialectic in the relationship between museum and artist: how does an artists work come to be exhibited in a museum? When and why does an artist engage in artistic creation outside the museum walls? Is the museum the space in which a "happening" takes place? The book includes texts by Russian and foreign art critics as well as a number of previously untranslated Soviet avant-garde texts about museums and proletarian folklore. 0

The Tatarstan State Museum of ine Arts, Museum of the Art of Asian Peoples, Tretyakov Gallery, Nizhnegorod State Museum of Fine Arts, the Smolensk State Museum, and the Academy of Arts contributed works to this catalogue of an exhibition that publishes works from various periods of Roerich's half century of painting: scenes of ancient history, legend, and mythology; set, costume, and curtain design for theatrical works such as Borodin's Prince Igor, Stravinsky's Rites of Spring; and a recurrent theme of Roerich's art: Asia, its severe and beautiful landscape, harmonious settlements, and solemn shrines. As much of a philosopher as an artist, Roerich spent much of his life pursuing and expressing a higher ideal, which he saw in myths and legends and in the timeless landscapes of mountain peoples. At first glance his paintings can seem monotonous but upon closer look one sees the nuances of color and subtle ways in which Roerich interwove the human and the natural worlds. An appendix reprints articles by contemporaries and excerpts from Roerich's writings.

'The Golden Child', Penelope Fitzgerald's first work of fiction, is a classically plotted British mystery centred around the arrival of the Golden Child at a London museum. Far be it for the hapless Waring Smith, junior officer at a prominent London museum, to expect any kind of thanks for his work on the opening of the year's biggest exhibition - The Golden Child. But when he is nearly strangled to death by a shadowy assailant and packed off to Moscow to negotiate with a mysterious curator, he finds himself at the centre of a sinister web of conspiracy, fraudulent artifacts and murder… Her first novel and a comic gem, 'The Golden Child' is written with the sharp wit and unerring eye for human foibles that mark Penelope Fitzgerald out as a truly inimitable author, and one to be cherished.

This edition was issued for the exhibition dedicated to the centenary of the first state museum of modern art, the Moscow Museum of Painterly Culture. From the late 1910s to the early 1920s, this museum, organised by left-wing artists, assembled the greatest collection of Russian avant-garde to date and performed unique research work. After the liquidation of the MZhK in 1929, over 700 of its artworks were transferred to the Tretyakov Gallery, which served as the first large acquisition to the Contemporary Art Departament. Beginning in the mid-1930s, the Museum of Painterly Culture vanished into oblivion for an extended period. The present edition is the first fundamental work to give a full picture of the Museum's history, its research work and library collection. Topical articles examine different aspects of how the MZhK Collection was assembled, exposition concepts and the activities of the Museum Bureau. The cataloque and two appendices constitute collection of artworks that arrived at the Gallery in 1929 and which was restored in preparation for the exhibition. The Documents sections contains important materials, including the 1929 'liquidation' lists that help evaluate the collection's scope and complexity of its life. The edition is intended for both specialists and those more generally interested in Russian art.
